FitSM® stands for “Fit Service Management.” It’s a lightweight and practical approach service management.
History
It was initially produced as part of a research project co-funded by the European Commission, FedSM, which concluded in 2015. It drew contributions from all of the partner organizations as well as members of the European research community. At the conclusion of the project, the management of FitSM® was transferred to the ITEMO e.V. non-profit organization, and all material was released under Creative Commons licenses.
Today, FitSM® is further developed and maintained by a team of the original authors and more recent contributors, continuing to operate through ITEMO that was developed specifically for research and education organizations.
Key Points
Here are some key points about FitSM®:
Purpose: It aims to provide a lightweight, easy to implement standard for (IT) service management that is more suitable than more complex frameworks like ITIL® and COBIT®.
Structure: FitSM is based on a Service Management System (SMS) that is comprised of:
7 General Requirement Areas for the service provider organization:
Top Management Commitment & Accountability
Documentation
Scope & Stakeholders
Planning the SMS (Plan)
Implementing the SMS (Do)
Monitoring and Reviewing the SMS (Check)
Continually Improving the SMS (Act)
14 Process Requirement Areas for the following processes of the service provider organization:
Service Portfolio Management
Service Level Management
Service Reporting Management
Service Availability & Continuity Management
Capacity Management
Information Security Management
Customer Relationship Management
Supplier Relationship Management
Incident and Service Request Management
Problem Management
Configuration Management
Change Management
Release and Deployment Management
Maturity Levels: It defines three levels of process maturity:
Basic
Intermediate
Advanced
Compatibility: While simpler, FitSM® is designed to be compatible with other (IT)Service Management frameworks like ITIL® and the ISO/IEC 20000® standard.
Focus: FitSM® emphasizes federation and integration, recognizing that organizations need to work collaboratively across boundaries.
Adoption: It has been adopted by organizations of any size and industry around the globe.
FitSM® is particularly useful for organizations that find full ITIL® implementation too complex or resource-intensive, but still want to improve their IT service management practices.
Key Features and Benefits
Besides FitSM® being a free service management standard, it has the following key features and benefits:
Scalability: Organizations can start with basic processes and scale up to more advanced levels as needed.
Flexibility: FitSM® allows organizations to implement processes at different maturity levels, making it easier to adapt to specific needs and resources.
Self-Assessment: The framework includes a free self-assessment tool that helps organizations evaluate their current service management maturity and identify areas for improvement.
Continuous Improvement: FitSM® encourages a cycle of continuous improvement, allowing organizations to gradually enhance their service management capabilities.
Training and Certification: There are FitSM® training courses and certifications available, each with shorter time commitments than ITIL® certifications.
Community-Driven: FitSM® benefits from ongoing input and refinement from its user base.
Cost-Effective: As a lightweight standard, FitSM® can be less expensive to implement than more comprehensive frameworks like ITIL®.
